KTSM News – Sheriff’s Office: Crossing Rio Grande can be dangerous

Posted on March 29, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Firefighters in San Elizario were sent out about reports of an individual in the water on Friday afternoon, March 29.

The incident happened at Las Pampas Road and Petunia.

It is unclear if a person was found or not at this time.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, however, did want to remind people about the dangers of crossing the Rio Grande.

Earlier in the week the Sheriff’s Office responded to two separate “drowning incidents” in far East El Paso County.

Here is the statement the Sheriff’s Office sent out about the dangers of crossing the Rio Grande.

“The Rio Grande is a powerful river with hidden dangers that pose a serious risk to anyone attempting to cross it. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office urges all individuals to heed this vital warning and refrain from crossing the Rio Grande. The consequences of crossing can be severe and life-threatening.

“The Rio Grande’s swift currents and unpredictable depths can lead to severe injuries and can put anyone’s life at risk. The river’s powerful force and treacherous conditions make it extremely hazardous for anyone navigating its waters, even the most experienced swimmer. Those attempting to cross may be swept away or struggle to swim against the strong current, resulting in life-threatening situations.

“Tragically, many have lost their lives trying to cross. For the safety and well-being of our community members, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office strongly advises against crossing the Rio Grande and would like to remind migrants wishing to enter the United States to do so at designated ports of entry. Life is invaluable and risking it for any reason is not worth the potential consequences. Please spread this message and help keep our community safe. Together, we can prevent accidents and tragedies associated with crossing the Rio Grande.”
