EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – A man was arrested on Tuesday, May 27, after he assaulted another man and barricaded himself inside a smoke shop in Socorro, the Socorro Police Department said in a news release.
Socorro Police said that shortly after 1:40 a.m. on Tuesday, officers were dispatched to the 9900 block of Alameda Avenue about a welfare check regarding a subject down in the roadway.
Upon arrival, officers found an unconscious 23-year-old man who had sustained injuries consistent with an assault. The victim was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment, Socorro Police said.
Socorro Police said that during the course of the investigation, officers attempted to make contact with a man, later identified as Edgar Allen Marquez, 24, located nearby. Marquez ran into the Valley Smoke Shop and barricaded himself inside.
Detectives responded to the scene, secured a search warrant, and entered the business, ultimately detaining several individuals, Socorro Police said.
The investigation revealed that Marquez was responsible for the assault, Socorro Police said. He was taken into custody and charged with assault causing bodily injury. He was then booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility under a $10,000 bond, Socorro Police said.
Socorro Police said a subsequent search of the business resulted in the discovery of narcotics and drug paraphernalia.
Subsequently, a 20-year-old woman, Bryanna Chantal Salas, was arrested for an outstanding criminal warrant for manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance with a $15,000 bond, Socorro Police said.
The remaining individuals located inside the business were released at the scene.
“This was an isolated incident. Our officers did exactly what they’re trained to do — act quickly, work together, and keep our community safe. We’ll continue to do our part to make sure anyone bringing criminal activity into our city is held accountable,” Chief of Police Robert C. Rojas said.
