KTSM News – Socorro: Working ‘diligently’ to combat red flour beetle

Posted on September 23, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The City of Socorro says it is working “diligently” with Texas A&M entomologists and others to combat an influx of red flour beetles that has been impacting the City.

The City of Socorro said they have also been working with the Texas Department of Agriculture and have been focusing on identifying food sources “attracting these pests and resolving the problem.”

Texas A&M entomologists — scientists who study insects — identified a food source that was located on private property, the City said.

The City of Socorro said it has been “working closely with the owner to mitigate and have them fumigate that area.”

“We are also placing traps in and around the City to ensure that no other food sources exist that require treatment,” the City of Socorro said.

“We understand the frustrations of our residents, as we all live in Socorro and are affected by this nuisance,” the City said in its news release. “We want to assure you that we are diligently working to address the situation and ask for our cooperation.”

Entomologists recommend that affected residents clean their homes thoroughly, including emptying and sanitizing pantries, the City said.

“Understanding that many cannot afford to restock their pantries, the City has partnered with El Pasoans Fighting Hunger food bank to set up pop-up relief food pantries, starting next week to provide food replacements,” the City said.

If your home has been affected, you can call the City administration at (915) 858-2915.
