EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – The South Fork Fire, which started Monday, June 17 on the Mescalero Apache Reservation near the community of Ruidoso, was caused by lightning strike, the Bureau Indian Affairs announced Wednesday, July 3.
The Bureau said human activity and factors did not contribute to the cause.
Despite aggressive response by multiple agencies, high wind spread the fire to over 15,000 acres within the first 24 hours. As of July 3, the fire is 17,569 acres and 87 percent contained, according to the Bureau.
The cause of the nearby Salt Fire, which is at 7,939 acres and 84 percent contained, remains under investigation.
The FBI is offering $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for starting the Salt Fire.
