KTSM News – State Police: Head-on crash involving semi-trailer leaves man dead

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — An 18-year-old man is dead after a head-on crash early Sunday morning, Aug. 17, five miles west of Hatch, New Mexico, in Doña Ana County, according to the New Mexico State Police (NMSP).

Shortly before 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, officers were dispatched to a crash with injuries that occurred on New Mexico State Road 26 near milepost 41.

The investigation revealed that a semi-trailer was traveling west on NM 26 while a Cadillac was traveling east. For unknown reasons, the Cadillac left its lane of travel and went into the westbound lane, colliding head-on with the semi-trailer.

The driver of the Cadillac, identified as Gabriel Gonzales, 18, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the semi-trailer did not appear to sustain any injuries.

Additionally, the New Mexico Department of Transportation reported that the area of the crash was closed for at least five hours.
