EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Sun Metro is celebrating National Dump the Pump Day by providing free rides all day Thursday, June 20.
According to the news release by the City of El Paso, Dump the Pump Day is to encourage people to save money by riding public transportation.
“We invite everyone who has never tried Sun Metro to take advantage of the free rides and give public transportation a try. Our system can take residents where they need to go. Annually, we provide more than 5.5 million rides all while continuously working to make the system more efficient to provide a better customer experience,” said Sun Metro Director Anthony DeKeyzer.
According to the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), people can possibly save $13,000 a year by using public transportation instead of driving.
The APTA also says individuals are not only saving money by riding public transportation but also contributing to a cleaner environment and reducing traffic congestion.
Dump the Pump Day started in 2006 when gas prices were at record high and emphasized people to use public transportation as a great travel option that also saves money, according to the City.
