KTSM News – Sun Metro invites young El Paso artist to ‘I Spy on the Streetcar…’ art contest

Posted on November 4, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Sun Metro is inviting young El Paso artists from kindergarten through 12th grade to participate in the free “I Spy on the Streetcar…” art contest.

The contest will run until 5 p.m. on Jan. 17, 2025, and participants are encouraged to showcase their interpretations of El Paso’s vibrant culture and cityscapes, the City of El Paso said in a news release.

According to the City, “participants are encouraged to draw inspiration from the unique sights along the streetcar’s two interconnected loops, which carry riders through El Paso’s Downtown and Uptown districts, connecting them to local shops, eateries, and cultural landmarks.”

Each grade category winner (K-5, 6-8 and 9-12) will receive two six-month Sun Metro bus passes, a Sun Metro swag bag and the honor of having their artwork displayed at Sun Metro and City facilities, the City said.

“The contest provides an opportunity for our youth, El Paso’s future leaders, to get involved in our community and foster a sense of pride and ownership of our community through their artwork,” Sun Metro Director Anthony DeKeyzer said. “It also allows them to familiarize themselves with essential public services, such as Sun Metro which is a lifeline for many residents who rely on public transit to get around.”

The El Paso Streetcar System originally ran from the 1950s to 1974 and made its return in 2018 with six vintage-styled streetcars, styled in their original color schemes from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s, the City said.

Although the design is vintage-inspired, each streetcar has modern amenities for its passengers, including Wi-Fi, bike racks and ADA accessibility.

The streetcars operate seven days a week, with extended hours for special events and rides are always free – no passes required.

Regular operating hours are the following hours and days:

Monday through Thursday

7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Friday

7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Saturday

noon – 11 p.m.

Sunday

noon – 6 p.m.

You can download the Ride Sun Metro App to track streetcars.
