Officials say a male suspect called dispatch and advised that he was intoxicated and driving in Las Cruces and needed to be stopped. Around 11:55 p.m. Wednesday a DASO deputy located the vehicle near Valley and Lohman. The deputy tried to conduct a traffic stop, but the suspect failed to stop and continued driving erratically. DASO says the vehicle suddenly stopped in the area of Shalem Colony near the river and gunfire was exchanged between the deputy and the driver. The suspect was injured in the shooting and taken to Mountain View Hospital where he died from his injuries.

The deputy was not injured in the shooting. The officer Involved Shooting Task Force is investigating the incident.
