EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The El Paso Police Department’s Bomb Squad was called out to Socorro at about 5 p.m. Sunday, July 13 when a suspicious box was found near some gas pumps along Alameda Avenue.
After a thorough examination, the item was determined not to be a threat, the City of Socorro said in a news release.
At about 5 p.m. Sunday, the Socorro Police Department was sent out to the 10100 block of Alameda about a report of a suspicious item left near some gas pumps.
Officers met with the store clerk, who showed them a black Pelican box that was left next to the fuel station.
Officers thought the item was suspicous. Surveillance video also showed a male subject arriving in a pickup, opening the bed of the truck and placing the box near the pumps before driving away, the City of Socorro said.
The El Paso Police Bomb Squad was called “out of an abundance of caution and in the interest of public safety,” the City of Socorro said.
Specialized equipment was used to check the item and it was found to not be a threat.
Police Chief Robert C. Rojas said: “We can never be too cautious when it comes to protecting our community. Public safety is always our top priority, and we will take every possible measure to ensure it.”
