EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – The Hospitals of Providence Transmountain Campus is the first hospital in El Paso to introduce the Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) procedure to treat men with an enlarged prostate, according to a press release sent by Barracuda PR.
According to the press release, HoLEP, also known as benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), is a minimally invasive procedure that uses pulses of laser beam to remove tissue from the inside of the prostate, which surrounds the urethra, the tube leading from the bladder to the urinary opening.
This technique allows a physician to maximize tissue removal for long term effects while minimizing bleeding and complications.
BPH, or an enlarged prostate, is a non-cancerous condition where the prostate has grown to be larger than normal. When left untreated, BPH can cause significant health problems, including irreversible bladder or kidney damage, bladder stones and incontinence, according to the press release.
“HoLEP is a great new procedure that allows us to easily and safely remove large volumes of tissue within the prostate that are blocking the flow of urine,” said Dr. Jesus Herrera-Murillo, Urologist and physician who performed the first successful procedure in El Paso. “This procedure is minimally invasive and requires no incisions, offering our patients of all prostate sizes a faster recovery time and symptom relief.”
Additionally, BPH affects an estimated 70% of US men aged 60-69 and 80% men over 70 years.
BPH can lead to bladder outlet obstruction resulting in symptoms of incomplete emptying, urgency, nocturia, post micturition and weak stream. Extreme cases can lead to chronic catheter use, bladder stones, renal and bladder failure.
“Congratulations to Dr. Herrera-Murillo and the team on this achievement and milestone – we are committed to expanding treatment options for our community,” said David Byrd, chief executive officer for The Hospitals of Providence Transmountain Campus. “Our goal is to continue ensuring our patients have access to the care they need close to home.”
