EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – El Pasoan Tre Fierro is entering his fourth season competing in the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship, racing against the best dirt-bike riders in the world.
“It’s something special because a lot of people from the whole world come to race in this series. It’s the Supercross World Series and they know a lot of riders come from other countries and they want to compete because they know this is the pinnacle of the sport,” said Fierro.
KTSM caught up with Fierro once again, after he participated in the third round of the 2024 Supercross Championship in San Diego.
The Supercross Championship is divided into several rounds, held at outdoor stadiums and domes across the country, leading up to a final championship round.
Fierro and his team are backed by local sponsors but remains an “underdog” as he competes against the larger and superiorly funded factory teams like Honda, Red Bull and Rockstar, a battle of David & Goliath.
“One of the hardest things is to get a competitive motorcycle because they obviously have a bigger budget and that leads to more exotic parts, more research and development on the bikes,” said Fierro.
As a young prospect, Fierro competes in the 250 class. For drivers like him, the aspirations are to one day compete in the premier 450 class and get sponsored by the larger factory teams.
Each class has a final race at the end of the night which is called the Main Event. Only twenty-two riders make it to that event, after three separate rounds of qualifying. Making it to the event is a challenge and a measure of progress for drivers like Fierro.
According to Fierro, in the 50 years of the AMA Supercross Championship, he’s only one of the two El Pasoans to ever qualify for the Main Event of a Supercross round, a feat he has accomplished twice.
Entering his fourth season, Fierro still dons the number 158, but has his sights on ranking in the top 100 drivers this year, so that he can earn a double-digit number next year.
“The next goal for me is to get a national number. Being already here in these races, you are the best of the best. But I think that’s just like the next little step I could take to be at the top of the sport,” said Fierro.
Fierro will be traveling to Anaheim next weekend for the fourth round of the championship, his sights will be on qualifying for the next event and taking a step closer to earning that double digit number.
