EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The New Mexico Supreme Court ordered a temporary halt to a trial in the criminal case against former New Mexico State University basketball player Deshawndre Washington.
Washington is facing multiple sexual assault charges from the hazing scandal that rocked the 2022-2023 men’s basketball season at New Mexico State University.
The trial was originally scheduled to begin on Monday, Oct. 20 in Las Cruces.
The New Mexico high court made its ruling in a rare a Saturday decision.
Washington’s attorney is seeking to withdraw from the criminal case against him. Washington had filed a petition on Oct. 14 that sought a change in his legal counsel.
A response is due to the Supreme Court by Oct. 31.
The trial will be postponed until further order from the NM Supreme Court.
