Newton, a two-time NCAA national champion at UConn, joins the likes of Gus Bailey, Jim Forbes, and Kenny Thomas as individuals who played high school basketball in El Paso that became NBA draft picks. Bailey attended Burges High School; Forbes attended Bel Air. Both were picked up in the 1974 NBA draft. Thomas went to Austin High School for three years before moving to Albuquerque for his senior year. Thomas was taken in the 1999 NBA draft.

25 years ago, Kenny Thomas went to Austin HS for 3 years, before moving to ABQ & was taken in the 1999 Draft.
