EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Fire officials are reporting continued progress in the battle against two wildfires burning outside of Silver City, New Mexico in the Gila National Forest.
The Trout Fire, 12 miles north of Silver City, is now at 96 percent contained, fire officials said on Tuesday morning, July 8. This fire has burned 47,294 acres since it started on July 12.

The newer Panther Fire, 10 miles west of Lake Roberts, is at 80 acres but is now 32 percent contained, fire officials said. The Panther Fire started on July 2.
Both have been determined to be caused by lightning.
There are about 150 firefighters still fighting the Trout Fire and about 60 assigned to the Panther Fire.
Hotshot crews have constructed fireline around three sides of the Panther Fire, fire officials said. The steep, rugged terrain along the northern perimeter of the fire is difficult to access. Minimal heat was visible on this section of the fire.
One hotshot crew will be extracted from the Panther Fire Tuesday, while the remaining hotshot crew will continue to secure the established perimeter, fire officials said.
Aerial resources will be used as needed.
As for the Trout Fire, it is nearing 100 percent containment. Tuesday, firefighters will continue to address any heat found close to the southwest edge of the fire. Firefighters will also be available for initial attack within the vicinity of the Trout Fire. Road repair will continue throughout the fire’s footprint.
Monday, the Gila National Forest lifted its Stage 2 fire restrictions. The Trout Fire area closure is still in effect.
Temperatures are expected to be 5 to 10 degrees above normal. Widely scattered thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon.
Residents and visitors are urged to remain vigilant and travel cautiously in the fire area and around firefighting personnel.
Local air quality ratings remain good despite the fires, officials said.
