KTSM News – TxDOT: I-10 Widening West Project 2 starts in northwest El Paso County

Posted on October 29, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will start work on the final segment of Interstate 10 widening from Vinton Road to the New Mexico state line next week, the department announced Tuesday, Oct. 29 in a news release.

TxDOT said the $120 million project, which is expected to last up to three and a half years, it will add one lane in each direction and reconstruct the main lanes in concrete pavement.

Safety features include lightning, wrong-way driver detection systems, and operational improvements along the 3.2-mile stretch of I-10 in northwest El Paso County, according to TxDOT.

“This project will complete the widening of I-10 from four lanes to six and provide improved mobility from the New Mexico state line to North Mesa Street,” TxDOT El Paso District Engineer Tomás Treviño said. “In addition, it will provide operational improvements for all entrance and exit ramps within the project limits.”

TxDOT said additional work will include aesthetic and landscape improvements along the entire 11.2-mile segment from North Mesa Street to Anthony, Texas, including the Los Mochis, Artcraft, Thorn, and Redd interchanges where space permits.

“Drivers can expect lane closures as crews begin widening the existing asphalt pavement to carry two lanes of traffic next week, and short-term full freeway closures as crews place barriers to begin work placing concrete pavement to add the lane to the inside,” read the news release.

The ongoing I-10 Widening West Project started on May 31, 2022, and is expected to be complete in Fall 2025, according to TxDOT.

TxDOT said its limits are from North Mesa Street to Vinton Road. I-10 Widening West 2 will start where it ends and progress toward the state line.
