EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – The University Interscholastic League released its new district realignments for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years on Thursday, bringing plenty of changes to the Borderland for a plethora of teams.
The new classifications and districts are based on enrollment sizes at high schools around the city. First, Americas and El Dorado have dropped from Class 6A to Class 5A for the next two years. For football, the Trail Blazers and Aztecs will play in Class 5A Division I and have been placed in a four-team District 1-5A Division I with Bel Air and Parkland.
Rather than try to find seven non-district games, the quartet of 5A D1 teams will play a round robin district slate, meaning they’ll play each other twice, once at home and once on the road.
District 1-6A largely stayed the same, other than losing Americas and El Dorado to Class 5A. District 1-6A will now be a seven-team league, rather than the nine-team district it has been the last two years.
More big changes occurred in Class 5A Division II, as Del Valle, Hanks and Horizon all moved from Division I to Division II, forcing the UIL to form a nine-team District 1-5A Division II. Those three teams are now in 1-5A DII with Canutillo, El Paso High, Andress, Burges, Chapin and Jefferson.
In Class 4A Division I, there will also now be a massive, nine-team district full of Borderland teams. Ysleta dropped from Class 5A Division I to Class 4A Division I. The Indians join District 1-4A Division I with Clint, Mountain View, Austin, Bowie, Irvin, Riverside, Fabens and San Elizario.
In Class 3A, Anthony and Tornillo are now together in District 3-3A Division II, in a four-team district with Alpine and Crane.
For non-football sports, the biggest change for the Borderland will be Americas move to Class 5A and what it means for the Trail Blazers’ basketball programs. AHS has been successful in Class 6A for years and a move to Class 5A could lead to some potential extended playoff runs.
