EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The United Way of El Paso County (UWEPC) has established the Government Shutdown Relief Fund to support those affected by the delay and/or reduced SNAP benefits, or those furloughed due to the shutdown, United Way announced in a news release.
According to the news release, the initial goal is to raise $25,000 that will be matched 2-to-1 by the Paso del Norte Health Foundation and the UWEPC, maximizing impact. These can be submitted here.
“The continued mission of United Way of El Paso County is to respond to the community’s needs in real-time, providing support through the Center for Resiliency, which exists to stabilize households and foster community healing by addressing the intertwined challenges of housing, insecurity, and trauma and leveraging external partners, such as the El Paso Community Foundation, Paso del Norte Health Foundation and Project Bravo,” read the news release.
In addition to collecting donations through the relief fund, UWEPC is working with local food distribution organizations to create volunteer opportunities for those looking to donate their time. Upcoming opportunities include the following:
- Kelly Center for Hunger Relief: Volunteer activities may include food distribution, planting or harvesting at Jardin de Milagros, assisting in the Clothes Closet. Those interested may email Volunteer@KellyFresh.org or call (915) 261-7499.
- El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank: Volunteer activities may include food distribution, packaging, or preparation. Walk-ins are welcome, or you can register here.
