EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A 35-year-old man is dead after exchanging gunfire with El Paso Police on Sunday afternoon, June 1 in El Paso’s Upper Valley, El Paso Police said.
Police said they were called out about a family violence incident in progress at about 3:15 p.m. Sunday along the 6400 block of Passo Via in the Upper Vallley.
As officers approved the home, a man — now identified as Salvador Valdiviezo — began firing at officers with a handgun, police said.
Both officers returned fire and Valdiviezo was struck several times. He was transported to a hospital where he later died, police said.
One officer was shot and was transported to the hospital and is in stable condition. Police have only identified the officer as a female officer who is a two-year veteran of the department.
The other officer involved in the incident has also been with the department for two years.
Three simultaneous investigations are being conducted into the shooting — by the Texas Rangers, the El Paso Police Department’s Crimes Against Persons Unit and by Internal Affairs.
