EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – A man, later identified as a Fort Bliss soldier by the 1st Armored Division, is dead after a motorcycle crash early Monday morning, May 19, on Spur 601, El Paso Police Department (EPPD) said in a news release.
EPPD said that shortly after 1:30 a.m. on Monday, officers responded to a single-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle on Spur 601.
The preliminary information said that a motorcyclist was traveling west on Spur 601 at a high rate of speed near Global Reach Drive, EPPD said.
EPPD said that the motorcyclist died at the scene when officers arrived.
The Special Traffic Investigations unit was requested, and the preliminary investigation revealed that the motorcyclist failed to negotiate the curb in the roadway and struck the center concrete barrier, EPPD said.
As we previously reported, Fort Bliss said the motorcyclist who died in the crash has been identified as Spc. Austin Rhodes, 24, a Patriot fire control operator assigned to the 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command.
EPPD said failure to control speed on behalf of the motorcycle operator is a contributing factor to the crash. This is the 23rd traffic fatality, compared to 25 at the same time last year.
