KTSM News – VA to break ground for new health care center at Fort Bliss

Posted on August 15, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – A groundbreaking ceremony for a new Veterans Affairs health care center will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 28 at Fort Bliss, 18549 Heavy Medics.

New VA health care center at Fort Bliss takes major step forward

Last December, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) awarded a $617,499,000 contract to Clark Construction Group, Smith Group and HKS to construct a 492,995 gross-square-foot health care center (HCC) in El Paso, according to a press release sent by the VA.

“This historic investment in VA Health Care marks an exciting new chapter for Southwest Texas and Southern New Mexico Veterans,” Froy Garza, the El Paso VA Health Care System executive director said. “The construction of this state-of-the-art health care facility will build upon our commitment to meet the health care needs of those who have given so much in service to our country.”

The VA said with a new central energy plant, the “energy-efficient” health care facility is projected to provide enhanced outpatient services to over 54,000 Veterans each year. This includes primary care, mental health, specialty care, ambulatory surgery and ancillary services.

“The construction of the El Paso VA Health Care Center is the result of VA’s efforts to improve planning and implementation of a design-build project,” said Michael D. Brennan, PhD., VA Office of Construction and Facilities Management executive director. “Most importantly, upon completion, the facility will service and improve access to world-class health care for Veterans in the El Paso area.”

The new El Paso HCC is being built on an approximately 36-acre site on Fort Bliss near the recently relocated William Beaumont Army Medical Center, according to the VA.

“The project includes site work, primary utilities, central energy plant, access roads, surface parking, storm water management, site lighting and landscaping, and associated improvements. It is expected to open for patient care in 2028,” read the press release.
