KTSM News – Voters will decide fate of Downtown arena project

Posted on August 13, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — It’s official. After weeks of moving in this direction, the El Paso City Council voted on Tuesday, Aug. 13 to ask the City’s voters to decide the fate of the much-delayed and controversial multipurpose center or Downtown arena project as it often called.

The council approved an ordinance calling for a ballot measure on the Nov. 5 general elecdtion ballot. The council also approved the language for the ballot measure too.

The ballot measure will ask voters to decide whether to cancel the City’s remaining authority to issue $128.5 million in general obligation bonds allocated for project.

In 2012, voters approved the issuance of bonds to support the development of a Downtown arena project.

The ballot measure will read as follows:

“TO CANCEL THE CITY’S AUTHORITY TO ISSUE THE REMAINING $128,455,636 IN GENERAL OBLIGATION BONDS FOR THE MULTIPURPOSE PERFORMING ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT FACILITY TO BE LOCATED IN DOWNTOWN EL PASO WHICH WAS APPROVED BY THE VOTERS IN THE CITY’S NOVEMBER 6, 2012 ELECTION, RESULTING IN THE REVOCATION OF THE BONDS?”

The City will launch an educational campaign and host nine community meetings in the coming weeks to help educate the community about the ballot language.
