KTSM News – Walk-up weddings on Valentine’s Day in Las Cruces has people saying ‘I do’

Posted on February 15, 2024

LAS CRUCES, NM (KTSM) — One Las Cruces church hosted their 3rd annual walk-up weddings on Valentine’s Day for couples to tie the knot.

The Morning Star United Methodist Church hosted their walk-up wedding event at the Plaza in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Reverend Amy Wilson Feltez told KTSM the idea for the quick and free weddings came from the aftermath of the pandemic.

“Knowing that a lot of people had postponed taking their vows, we wanted to remove some of those barriers. Valentine’s Day is a great day to celebrate love” Wilson Feltez said.

Wilson Feltez said couples drive from all over to tie the knot.

“People drove from Alamogordo, from Los Alamos, from El Paso, from Albuquerque…,” Wilson Feltez said.

One Los Alamos native couple said they have been together for seven months and with a baby on the way this was the perfect time to say their “I do.”

“We got our marriage license like a week ago. We found out through Instagram about the post, you know, that they were partnering up with the Dona Ana County Courthouse so we’re getting married today,” Michelle Devora, a newlywed said.

Another Las Cruces native couple said they have been together for 12 years and on February 14, 2024 they finally “eloped.”

“It’s so crazy because if his mom and my mom hadn’t worked together and decided to make a plot and decide to give my husband my number in a Post-it note, we would never have been able to meet, and I think it’s just fate,” Briana Pennock and Cameron Pennock said.

Brides and grooms told KTSM that it would be easier for them to remember Valentines Day and their wedding anniversary.

“Like, you can’t forget Valentine’s Day and I won’t forget my anniversary,” Devora said.

Wilson Feltez said close to 70 couples have attended their walk up/drive-thru weddings in the past three years and they plan to host again next year to give couples the opportunity to live in everlasting love.
