PARIS, France (KNWA) — The Paris 2024 Olympics kicked off with a mix of challenges and triumphs on the first day of competition. Despite the rainy weather that began at the opening ceremonies and continued into the morning and afternoon, the United States secured its first medals.
The weather significantly impacted several events. The men’s skateboard street event, scheduled for preliminaries and finals Saturday, had to be postponed until Monday due to the rain. The women’s competition is set to proceed Sunday.
At Roland Garros Stadium, the clay tennis courts were deemed unsuitable for play in the rain, resulting in the postponement of matches.
The cycling time trials did take place, but the slippery conditions posed challenges for the cyclists.
A major concern arose with the upcoming triathlon, scheduled for Tuesday. The recent rainfall raised questions about the safety of swimming in the Seine River, prompting officials to test the water to ensure it is safe for the athletes. Results are expected soon.
