KTSM News – What Borderland leaders are saying about government shutdown

Posted on September 30, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — With a federal government shutdown set to take place starting at 10 p.m. Mountain Time on Tuesday, Sept. 30, here is what El Paso area lawmakers are saying about the situation.

U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar, D-Texas

Escobar issued the following statement via X.

“At midnight, the federal government will run out of money. Republicans are making false claims about what’s at stake and what this moment is about. They control the House, Senate and White House and a shutdown is their doing. House Republicans aren’t even at the Capitol!

“The absent House Republicans may claim, ‘We’ve already passed our bill!’ That’s true, but they did so knowing it would fail in the Senate. You can’t blame a shutdown on us when you present an unworkable ‘solution’ and then skip town.”

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas

“Senate Democrats’ rejection of the House-passed, clean Continuing Resolution proves they’d rather shut the government down than work across the aisle for the benefit of the American people.”

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas

“Senator Schumer and the Democrats have made it clear that they intend to shut down the federal government. Their demands include taxpayer-funded health care for illegal aliens and a reversal of the Republican reforms blocking handouts to able-bodied adults who refuse to work.

“Americans voted for change under President Trump and a Republican Congress. We should not allow the Democrats’ efforts to succeed.”

U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas

“Two weeks ago, I supported passing a clean funding bill in the U.S. House to keep the government open, pay federal workers, and enhance health care services for veterans. Without Senate action today, our government will shut down. We should not be grandstanding at the expense of the American people.”
