EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – New Mexico State men’s basketball defeated Florida International by a 28-point margin to snap the Aggies three game losing skid on Saturday night, Feb. 15. NMSU walked away with the 76-48 victory at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces.
After hitting a bit of a slump from the floor, NMSU was able to improve its numbers from the field finishing at 46.2%. Its defense also held its opponent to its lowest shooting percentage since late November against Bowling Green when they allowed just 28.8%. Aggies gave up just 30.4% from the field against the Panthers.
Leading scorers included NMSU’s Zawdie Jackson collecting a team high 21-points on the night, going 6-for-6 from the field and 3-for-3 from the 3-point line for 16 points in the second half. The guard stepped up big time to fill the shoes of Peter Filipovity who sat out for the second consecutive game due to battling an illness.
Jaden Harris (13) along side Robert Carpenter Jr. (11) also finished in double digits. Christian Cook (7), Nate Tshimanga (7), Emmanuel Tshimanga (6) and Dionte Bostick (5) also contribued to the win.
Cleaning up their game, the Aggies hope to carry these improvements into their next game against Conference USA leader Jax State. NMSU will take to the road Thursday, Feb. 20 to face the Gamecocks at 5 p.m. MT.
