EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A woman carrying her child across the street was struck by a car that then left the scene on Monday, July 29.
The shocking incident was captured on video by a nearby home’s surveillance system and it surfaced on social media when FitFam posted it, sparking outrage and much commentary across the Borderland community.
The crash happened Monday afternoon at Manila and Pickerel drives in Northeast El Paso. The woman and child were on their way home from the first day of school.
KTSM 9 News talked to the woman who was hit by the car. The woman, who didn’t want to be identified publicly, walks us through what happened.
She said she was picking up her daughter after her first day of school. Her daughter is a first-grader.
It was pouring rain and she carried her daughter across the street, using a designated crosswalk, so her daughter’s shoes and feet wouldn’t get wet.
“I saw the vehicle turn into the crosswalk,” the woman said. “I attempted to move out of the way and banged on the top of her hood. By then, she had already struck me on the side and I fell with my daughter.”
The woman reports that both she and her daughter are sore and suffered some bruises and scratches, but nothing serious.
The woman said the driver briefly got out of her car and said she didn’t see the woman or daughter when they were crossing the street.
During the chaos in the aftermath of the crash, the driver took off without providing any of her contact or insurance information, the woman said.
“I was just, panic and adrenaline rush to make sure my daughter was OK,” the woman said.
After they got home and were having dinner, the woman said she finally asked her daughter how her first day of school was.
“How did it go? ‘Really, mom. We got hit by a car,'” the woman said, recounting their dinnertime conversation.
The woman said she did file a police report.
She also wants to remind her fellow El Pasoans to slow down, get off their phones and pay attention when they are driving near school zones.
