EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — El Paso children and adults will be able to participate in the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson (WLSL) to learn how to swim in the riskiest month for aquatic accidents.
The event will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 20 at Camp Cohen Water Park, 9700 Gateway North, and Lost Kingdom Water Park, 6001 Hughey Dr.
Wet ‘N’ Wild will also participate in the event starting at 8 a.m. on Thursday, June 20 at 8804 S. Desert Blvd.
“We want to equip families with an understanding of the basic swimming skills and water safety knowledge they need to be safer in, on and around the water. Knowing how to swim and prevent drowning is truly a matter of life and death for all families, regardless of race, economics or geography,” said Director of Water Park Operations Pavlova Sheffield.
WSLS says the event will also take place at hundreds of aquatic facilities, swim schools and waterparks in over 20 countries in 24 hours.
According to WSLS, the month of July is the peak for water-related accidents and drowning risks in the U.S.
Drowning in the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 and the second leading cause of unintentional injury death for children ages 5 to 14, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.
