Dorothea Lange photographTexans You Should Know is a series highlighting overlooked figures and events from Texas history. “Mystery Woman’s Identity Sought,” read the provocative front-page headline of The Childress Index on May 13, 1979. The story printed in the Texas Panhandle–based paper included a black and white photograph of the person in question. Shot outdoors, it depicts a slender female of around forty years of age. The creases in her face are a chronicle of worry, toil, and wind. She raises her arm against the glare of a relentless sun, her hand gripping her forehead.
