She’s not one for drama, or sounding off on every political debate that makes its way through rural Austin County, sixty miles west of Houston. The Texas Superintendent of the Year focuses her time on the 2,200 kids entrusted to her care in Bellville ISD, including her own four children.But this legislative session, Poenitzsch has found it necessary to speak up on Governor Greg Abbott’s top emergency item: private school vouchers. When she looks at the proposed legislation—which would give parents public funds to pay for private school or home school—she has lots of questions, both as an educator and a taxpayer.
