Shelves line every wall inside Larry McMurtry’s former home in Archer City. They stretch floor to ceiling along the hallways and into the bathrooms, lie secreted beneath the grand staircase, and surround the late author’s bedroom. They are empty now, although their white paint still bears the ghostly imprints of thousands of departed tomes. Curtis McMurtry remembers coming here after his grandfather’s death, in 2021, to find those books piled in stacks, waiting to be hauled off. He shudders slightly at the memory.
