In the nineteenth century, pioneers piled their belongings into covered wagons and headed west. Some two hundred years later, the married couple behind Hitchman Homestead are packing their own covered wagons and taking them in all directions.On an idyllic ten acres in the Hill Country just southwest of Kerrville, Genelle and Todd Hitchman bake pies, roast coffee beans, sharpen knives, and raise chickens. But their “pioneer arts” practice doesn’t end there: They build wagons, not for travel but for individuals and businesses to use as mobile coffee shops, outdoor bars, ticket booths, backyard kitchens, greenhouses, or even kids’ beds or chicken coops.
