Instead, seekers of second-hand treasure gather in a massive events center and do what they do best: root around. It’s a long-running and beloved event. But for a raccoon like me, the organized setup can feel a little polished. Sterile. The neat rows of vendors—and the whole money-in-exchange-for-goods thing—don’t quite allow the thrill I’m after. Raccoons have always known the real city-wide garage sale was twice a year, when the City of Austin provided residents with bulk pickup trash services.
