Poor SMU. Not only did the Mustangs lose to Penn State, 38–10, in the first round of the College Football Playoff, but every other Texas team is undefeated so far this postseason. Everybody knows about UT beating Clemson in its own CFP contest. But you might have missed the other games, because even in this era of the twelve-team playoff, you cannot stop the made-for-ESPN-streaming, sponsor-thirsty, for-obsessives-and-alumni-only minor bowl games. As usual, bowl season began well before Christmas. We’ve already had second-year FBS school Sam Houston beating Georgia Southern 31–26 in last week’s R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. And UTSA stomping Coastal Carolina 44–15 on the latter’s home field in the Myrtle Beach Bowl—a game in which the Roadrunners received an excessive-celebration penalty for romping…
