The last time Elsik High School played for a boys 6A state championship in soccer, it was 2018, and the program had overcome tremendous challenges to get there. Elsik, whose Rams return to the final this weekend, is one of three enormous public high schools in the Alief neighborhood of southwest Houston, a community of more than 100,000 people that is one of the most diverse in the country, home to immigrants and refugees from around the world.At Elsik, many kids show up with little to no experience speaking English, and some with no formal education at all.
