Go to enough political protests in Texas and the contours become pretty easy to spot, even from a distance. In the biggest cities, you’ll often find huge groups of people rallying for abortion rights or marching against restrictive immigration policies. The impressive crowds can create a mirage that this time, there’s something changing in the state. Then, of course, an election happens, and it turns out that massive rallies in Austin don’t mean much for progressive causes when 80 percent of rural Texans vote Republican. State leaders know where their support comes from, after all, and they aren’t bothered by symbolic rallies at the Capitol.
