Texas Monthly – We’re Not Cruising Into a Driverless Future Just Yet

The cars took over San Gabriel Street shortly after midnight. The road, which runs through a densely populated Austin neighborhood near the University of Texas, was already crowded. The Longhorns game against Wyoming had concluded just a few hours earlier, and students were out celebrating in the West Campus area. Pedestrians crowded the sidewalks, heading to the next bar or house party. Drivers, accustomed to slowly navigating the packed neighborhood, met an unexpected obstacle: at least twenty cars, bearing no drivers or passengers, had converged on San Gabriel. The empty cars were all Chevy Bolts with camera rigs affixed to the roofs, operated by driverless car company Cruise, a subsidiary of General Motors. Those cars were stuck, blocking one another along with other traffic. Motorists honked…
