EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The El Paso Independent School District Board of Trustees passed a resolution Tuesday night, Feb. 20 to move forward with a “Destination District Redesign” project, meaning the future of EPISD may start to look different.
The “Destination District Redesign” project will include changes to campuses districtwide.
EPISD Board President Israel Irrobali said the redesign will ensure high quality education for children in the district.
Irrobali told KTSM the idea came from the evaluation of all the current campuses and by looking at the number of students enrolled.
The redesign project has been in discussion since 2022 and is now making its way to the community as it is currently in the development stage.
When Irrobali was asked how the redesign will impact schools, educators and students, he said currently it’s about the upcoming discussions of the redesign and how it can slowly be implemented to identify what changes are needed and what needs fixing.
According to the Board of Trustees, over the past three decades enrollment has steadily declined and the decline is attributed to a decline in birth rates and a decline in school-aged population in the region, the state and the country.
The board anticipates declining numbers will continue until at least the 2032-33 school year.
“The redesign project is purely about making sure our students have the best educational journey ever. I’m a dad, a dad of the students in this district. I want to make sure that the kids that go to my the high school I went to or the middle school I went to has the same opportunities that every other kid in this district has and that’s really what the purpose of this plan is. It’s not just for the long-term planning and success for the district. It’s really putting students first and saying to be here in 15 years and still offer the greatest educational opportunities that we can. We have to start making steps to start planning,” Irrobali said.
Irrobali said the public should expect to see changes in step-by-step amounts without a known deadline.
Irrobali said the redesign will constantly evolve.
