EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A 37-year-old man has been arrested after robbing a Family Dollar store and firing a round at an employee on Monday, Oct. 28 in Vado, New Mexico, according to the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office (DASO).
Ruben Jose Trujillo, 37, was arrested and booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center for armed robbery, aggravated burglary, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and criminal damage to property.
According to DASO, deputies were dispatched a few minutes before 10 p.m. on Monday to 106 Vado Dr. about shots being fired. Before deputies arrived at the scene, the call for service was upped to an armed robbery in progress.
Deputies said a lone, male suspect, later identified as Trujillo, entered the store with a firearm and grabbed all the money from two open cash registers as the employees retreated to a back room, according to DASO.
Trujillo fired a round at one of the employees, narrowly missing her. He then fled on foot, according to DASO.
DASO detectives reviewed store security footage and were able to compile a general description of the masked robber.
Deputies were able to identify partial tattoos on the suspect’s neck and the shell casing of the fired bullet was recovered.
In the investigation, two potential addresses were surveillance and waiting for the arrival of Trujillo. He arrived at one of the addresses and was arrested immediately.
A search warrant was gathered for Trujillo’s residence, in which deputies found evidence of the Family Dollar robbery, as well as evidence of other robberies that had taken place in Las Cruces days earlier, according to DASO.
DASO deputies and detectives were assisted by the Metro Narcotics Unit in the 24-hour effort.
