EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Three law firms will be hosting a town-hall meeting in Sunland Park this week to talk to residents about potential legal action against the Camino Real Regional Utility Authority concerning arsenic in drinking water.
According to a news release sent out by Singleton Schreiber LLP, one of the law firms, CRRUA has been wrongfully providing arsenic-contaminated water to community members.
The utility, which provides water and wastewater service to Sunland Park and Santa Teresa, has been under fire for months over concerns about water quality and discolored water.
The meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21 at the Dona Ana Community College Sunland Park Center, 3365 McNutt Road.
CRRUA declined to comment about the upcoming meeting.
However, CRRUA has said it has now passed multiple arsenic tests since Jan. 24, including three NMED quarterly tests. The test results show that CRRUA has been below federal maximum contaminate level of 10 parts per billion for arsenic and that its system is in compliance.
The meeting will be hosted by Singleton Schreiber, in collaboration with the law offices of Israel Chávez LLC and Markowski Ruvalcaba Law Firm LLC.
Arsenic is a highly toxic substance often found in groundwater, the law firms said in its news release. According to the news release, it can lead to severe, lasting, and life-threatening health issues.
Exposure to arsenic has been linked to symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, numbness, high blood pressure, muscle cramping, hair loss, and various skin disorders, according to the news release.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has long warned of arsenic’s dangers, referring to it as the “perfect poison” due to its odorless, nearly tasteless nature and its ability to cause prolonged, undetectable harm in the human body, the law firms said.
“It is alleged that CRRUA knowingly sold water with arsenic levels exceeding legal limits, despite repeated warnings from regulatory authorities, without adequately informing the public of the health risks,” read the news release. “CRRUA’s alleged actions represent a willful, reckless disregard for the community safety.”
The meeting will include a panel of attorneys who will discuss water contamination and the legal rights of affected residents.
The attorneys will be available to answer questions in English and Spanish, providing attendees with insights into potential legal actions and steps moving forward.
