KTSM News – Texas Tech lights up campus for holidays, cancer ‘warriors’

Posted on December 2, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Texas Tech Health El Paso is getting into the holiday spirit and wants the community to come out and celebrate too.

They also want to celebrate the resiliency and courage of people who have fought cancer.

The university will host its second annual Lighting Campus for Hope from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6.

“This free, family-friendly celebration promises to dazzle and delight, featuring festive holiday lights and live music, a spectacular firework extravaganza, photos with Santa and friends, a mascot dance-off, and much more. Bring your appetites: Food trucks will be on-site, selling a variety of tasty dishes and refreshing drinks,” Texas Tech said in a news release.

Lighting Campus for Hope is more than just about celebrating the holidays. It is also a heartfelt celebration that shines the spotlight on the “bravery of cancer warriors,” who are invited to share their stories and be honored during the event, Texas Tech said.

The event is also used to highlight Texas Tech Health El Paso’s mission to “provide life-saving cancer screenings and comprehensive cancer care,” Texas Tech said.

The event also “builds excitement for the future Steve and Nancy Fox Cancer Center,” which will break ground in 2025.

On Aug. 8, 2023, Texas Tech Health El Paso, alongside community and business leaders Steve and Nancy Fox and their daughters Paige and Ashley, announced a $25 million investment to help bring a comprehensive cancer center to life here in El Paso.

In September of this year, the Paso del Norte Health Foundation announced a $5 million grant to support the future cancer center.

“When completed, this facility will ensure cancer warriors can receive top-notch care right here in the region, sparing families the emotional and financial burden of traveling far from home for treatment,” Texas Tech said.

Chief sponsors of the event are the Hunt Family Foundation, Lucky Duck and the Sundt Foundation.
