Border Report – Des Moines Public Schools superintendent in ICE custody

Posted on September 26, 2025

DES MOINES, Iowa (WHO) – The superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools, Dr. Ian Roberts, was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement after initially fleeing law enforcement and was then arrested for illegally possessing a firearm.

According to a release from the Iowa Department of Public Safety, officers approached Roberts in his vehicle after identifying himself, but he sped away. Officers later discovered his vehicle abandoned near a wooded area. State Patrol assisted in locating the subject and he was taken into ICE custody.

Roberts, who was originally from Guyana, entered the United States in 1999 on a student visa and was given a final order of removal by an immigration judge in May 2024. Roberts had existing weapon possession charges from February 5, 2020.

“We do not have all the facts. There is much we do not know. However, what we do know is that Dr. Roberts has been an integral part of our school community since he joined over two years ago. During his time with our district he has shown up in ways big and small, and has advocated for students and staff, and begun introducing concepts that will help us reimagine education for future generations of Des Moines students,” said Des Moines School Board President Jackie Norris during a press conference held Friday afternoon.

Norris announced that Associate Superintendent Matt Smith will immediately step into the role of Interim Superintendent.

“We stand firm with our community, many of whom are feeling sad, outraged, and helpless. We understand as we too are devastated by the news of his detainment. However, this does not stop our important work and we will continue to provide outstanding education to the students and our community,” said Smith.

The investigation into how Roberts acquired the handgun is being turned over to the ATF. It is a violation of federal law for those in the U.S. without legal status to possess a firearm and ammunition.

Dr. Ian Roberts’ background

Dr. Roberts became the 14th leader of Des Moines Public Schools in May 2023. Roberts was the superintendent of the Millcreek Township School District in Pennsylvania for three years and before that, he worked in St. Louis, Baltimore, Washington, D.C. and New York City.

Roberts received his undergraduate degree from Coppin State and his Ed.D. and master’s degree from St. John’s University.

He was born in Guyana and competed for that nation in the 2000 Olympic Games, running the 800 meters.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
