In his yard stood a 31,000-gallon rainwater tank, shaped like a twelve-foot-tall silo, and a generator capable of powering his entire house. One of the Austin Fire Department’s stations is across the street from his home in West Austin; when the city’s frozen, burst pipes cut off the water supply for many, including the firefighters, Martin was able to offer them water from his own reserve. “It’s pretty bad if you’re having to give the fire department water,” he said, “but that’s what we ended up doing.”As his day job, Martin works for the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies, a trade association focused on property and casualty insurance.
