Posted on November 1, 2024

SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — Tijuana officials say 500 bars and restaurants in the city lack the necessary permits and licenses to legally sell alcohol and could be forced to close in the coming weeks.

Miguel Loza, president of the Spectacles, Recreation and Alcohol Commission says at the very least, the establishments are facing large fines.

“Those who don’t comply with the requisites or don’t show up for formal meetings with the city will have their operating licenses revoked and will not be able to remain in business,” Loza said.

He said there are more than 3,800 active licenses in the city, but 500 have not renewed their permits, updated their paperwork or applied for a license.

“We are trying to determine a process so that within a week we can start figuring out a course of action against those in violation.”

Loza stated most of the violations are occurring on the east side of the city where there is a lot of development as new restaurants, bars and nightclubs are setting up.
