El Paso Matters – Can Texans still register to vote past the Oct. 7, 2024, deadline if they go to an early voting location?

Posted on November 1, 2024

NO.

Texas requires residents to submit their voter registration application at least 30 days before Election Day. There are no exceptions.

Texans may request a provisional ballot at an early voting location or Election Day polling place if their registration status is unclear.

A ballot board will determine whether the voter was registered but was listed in the wrong precinct or erroneously removed from the voter registration list, the Texas Administrative Code states.

The board then determines whether to count the ballot. A provisional voter will be notified of the board’s decision within 10 days of the election.

This fact brief is responsive to conversations such as this one.
