EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A magnitude 4.2 earthquake on Sunday, March 2 shook Culberson County in West Texas, according to the U.S. Geological Survey and others who track earthquakes.
The earthquake hit at about 3:30 p.m. Mountain time and was centered about 30 miles south of Whites City, New Mexico, which is the town where Carlsbad Caverns National Park is located, according to the USGS.
Volcano Discovery, which also tracks earthquakes, said the quake happened in Culberson County, but there was no significant damage or impact.
On Feb. 14, a 4.9 magnitude earthquake, centered about 30 miles northwest of Toyah, Texas in Reeves County, could be felt in El Paso and elsewhere in the Borderland.
In a story KTSM reported last week, scientists say fracking, a process associated with oil and gas exploration, has led to an increase in earthquakes in West Texas in the past decade.
