EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Two students and their professor represented El Paso on a national stage.

El Paso Community College (EPCC) students and professors presented at the Special Interest Group Technical Symposium in Computer Science Education (SIGCSE TS) in Portland, Oregon, from March 20 through 23.
According to EPCC, the team consisted of two Computer Science students, Ivan Alonso and Emiliano Garcia, and their professor, Dr. Christian Servin.

Their project, “The Fingerprint Assignment: An Interdisciplinary Assessment for CS I Education” was selected among competitive submissions of over 30 works from multiple countries, according to EPCC.

EPCC is the first community college in the SIGCSE TS and is among top universities such as Stanford, Berkeley, and Princeton.

According to EPCC, SIGCSE TS is focused on sharing and addressing common challenges among educators, and the symposium serves as a hub for innovative ideas, teachings, and the latest technologies.

“Participating in this project under Dr. Servin’s guidance helped me gain skills that I will use as a computer scientist. The project presented many challenges that enhanced my educational experience and boosted my professional development,” said Garcia.

“Through participation in this research, I discovered knowledge beyond the classroom. Engaging in research exposed me to real-world applications and challenges, which fostered a deeper appreciation for the complexities of the field,” said Alonso.
