KTSM News – Tips as you prepare to file your taxes this tax season

Posted on February 1, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Tax season is here and one local business shares tips on what you need to have and how you can file.

Quick & EZ Tax Solutions told KTSM that taxes equal wealth and the more money one can keep, the more one can save, invest and help get their child through college.

Their local business is 100% virtual as clients tell them their process is easy by being able to file their taxes anytime and anyplace.

Shavona and Daviyan Floyd, Quick & EZ Tax Solutions owners, said a person filing their taxes needs:

W-2 form

Identification card / Driver’s license

Social Security card

Possibly their child’s birth certificate for verification

The IRS started to take returns on January 29, and anyone can file up until April 15.

“Especially if you’re not sure if you’re going to get a refund. If you’re not going to get a refund, please file in between those time because you don’t want to get a penalty or get charged any extra fees because you file late,” Floyd said.

Floyd said many pay stall on filing their taxes because it can be frustrating to some.

Another frustrating factor Floyd mentioned is the child credit.

“Children equals dollars because child credit. But right now, $2,000 per child. I mean, if you paid a certain amount in taxes and you’ve got a lot of children and that can count, you’re most likely going to be the biggest winner in regards as large as refund,” Floyd said.

Another qualifying factor that could receive a large refund is those who qualify as low income.

“You have children and lower income because what they’re doing is they’re actually throwing a lot of the, you know, benefits on lower income. Even the reason why they’re doing the potentially increase in the child credit is because they’re trying to help lower income,” Floyd said.

Quick & EZ Tax Solutions shares some things that can be written off:

Medical expenses like a dental visit that you pay out of pocket.

If you work from home, you can write off cleaning supplies and toiletries.

If you rent an apartment or home, you can deduct a portion of your rent.

According to the IRS you can write off:

Gambling losses

Teachers can deduct up to $300 of any unreimbursed business expenses for classroom materials, such as books, supplies, computer etc.
